About the talk:
We spend an average of one-third of our entire lives engaged in a mysterious state of consciousness called “sleep,” yet little is known about what happens during sleep and why we seem to need it so much. In this talk, Dr. Lim will discuss:

  • A brief history of sleep research
  • Current hypothesized functions of sleep
  • Why sleep is important in clearing brain waste and toxic proteins related to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
  • New therapies on the horizon

About Dr. Lim:

Dr. Miranda M. Lim, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University and a Staff Neurologist and Research Investigator at the VA Portland Health Care System. She earned a combined MD/PhD degree from Emory University in Atlanta in 2006. She then completed a neurology residency at Washington University in Saint Louis in 2010 and fellowship training in Sleep Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, pursuing postdoctoral research related to sleep and traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Lim is currently a practicing neurologist and sleep clinician who runs a basic and translational research program: Sleep & Health Applied Research Program (SHARP), to uncover the mechanisms by which sleep promotes brain health, using both rodent and human subjects.

About BRAIN TLC:
Brain TLC is an on-going OHSU lecture series - open to all community members - focused on aging, dementia prevention and brain health.

Please send questions for Dr. Lim, before or during the event, to be addressed at the end of the talk. Email Natasha at spoden@ohsu.edu
