Physician Assistant of the Year

Michelle Freeman

Congratulations to Michelle Freeman, PA-C, the Lead APP in the CVICU, who has been named the 2021 OHSU Physician Assistant of the Year by the OHSU PA Council. The council presented the award at the close of National PA Week on Oct. 12.  Council Chair Christa Fiske, PA-C said “Michelle is an advocate for the well-being of her unit's APPs, especially during the pandemic where her unit cared for COVID patients and medical intensive care unit overflow patients, while continuing to care for incredibly complex cardiac and surgical sub-specialty patients.”

Research

Congratulations to Drs. Austin Peters, Eric Schnell, Julie Saugstad, and Miriam Treggiari for their article  titled “Longitudinal Course of Traumatic Brain Injury Biomarkers for the Prediction of Clinical Outcomes: A Review” published in the Journal of Neurotrauma in August 2021. This work is a thesis that TBI biomarkers are better utilized in longitudinal/sequential measurements versus the current standard of just a single biomarker test. By measuring these proteins that are released from the CNS into the peripheral blood stream, you can observe sub-acute changes before they present clinically, and possibly measure therapeutic efficacy - meaning help determine if a drug is improving things instead of waiting 6 months to assess a functional recovery.

Congratulations to Dr. Kim Mauer for acceptance of her abstract for a Poster Presentation at the upcoming 63rd Annual ASH Meeting and Expo in December. Dr. Mauer’s work titled “Profile of Pain Medication Use in Hemophilia and Hemarthrosis: An Analysis of a Pharmacy Claims Database” is a review looking at how often opioids are used in hemophilic arthropathy.
