Background
Dr. Zhang's research is aimed to understand the activation mechanism of Th17 and other T cell subsets in inflamed tissues. He focuses on the regulatory role of co-stimulatory molecules (CD26, CD40 and CD134) in the effector T cell activation and trafficking. In addition, his laboratory has recently showed that heme oxygenase-1 modulates IL-17 and IL-21 production. As a pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Zhang hopes his research will further advance the treatment of immune-related GI disease such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Eosinophilic Esophagitis.
