Dr. Alkayed is Professor and Vice Chair for Research of Anesthesiology and PeriOperative Medicine (APOM) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and holds a joint appointment in Physiology and Pharmacology. He is Director of the newly formed Division of Cerebrovascular Research and Associate Director of the Research Center for Gender-Based Medicine at OHSU. In addition, Dr. Alkayed serves on the Program for Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (PMCB) and the Neuroscience Graduate Program (NGP) at OHSU.Dr. Alkayed is funded through two R01 grants from the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS) to study the role of sEH in ischemic brain injury and vascular dysfunction after stroke n postmenopausal females. In addition, he has a grant from the Oregon Alzheimer Disease Center to study the role of sEH in aging-related white matter lesions. Dr. Alkayed sits on the editorial boards of Stroke, The American Journal of Physiology–Heart and Circulation, and the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism. He is a member of the American Heart Association Brain and Stroke Study Section and the National Institutes of Health Neural Oxidative Metabolism and Death Study Section. Dr. Alkayed grew up in Amman, Jordan. He earned his medical degree from Stavropol State Medical Academy in Russia and a PhD in physiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. After completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Alkayed launched his academic career as Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1998. He joined OHSU in 2003 as Associate Professor, was promoted to Professor in 2008, and to Vice Chair for Research in 2011.
