Background

Wei Huang obtained his bachelor's degree in 1988 from Fudan University, Shanghai,China, and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1994 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1995 to 1998. Dr. Huang has more than eighteen years experience with in vivo MR research. Wei Huang's main magnetic resonance (MR) research interest was in the field of neurodisorders when he was an assistant professor in the radiology department at Stony Brook from 1998 to 2003. His focus switched to cancer research when he worked for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 2003-2008. Currently, Dr. Huang's main effort is in oncologic MR research, applying advanced MR techniques for early and accurate cancer detection and monitoring therapeutic response.

A major, NIH-funded research projects of Dr. Huang’s is to use a shutter-speed model dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI technique which was developed in this laboratory to improve breast cancer diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary biopsy procedures on women with benign lesions. Another major project is to use multiple functional MR methods (DCE-MRI, vessel size index MRI, diffusion-weighted MRI and proton MR spectroscopy) for early prediction of breast cancer response to chemotherapy and for accurate assessment of residual cancer after therapy for optimum surgical planning/decision. Other ongoing or planned oncologic MR research studies cover the topics of soft tissue sarcoma, head and neck cancer, liver cancer and colorectal cancer.
