Background
Research Interest: Rare lung diseases including:Alpha-one antitrypsin deficiency; bronchiectasis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis Dr. Barker joined the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care in 1976. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function lab. In addition, Dr. Barker serves as Medical Director of the Respiratory Therapy Program at Mount Hood Community College. Dr. Barker also maintains active outpatient practices in rare lung diseases. Dr. Barker has been recognized as a regional and national expert on AAT deficiency and in the treatment of patients with AAT deficiency with augmentation therapy and has published numerous journal articles on the subject. In addition, Dr. Barker is also recognized as an expert on bronchiectasis and is involved in trials of aerosol antibiotics to reduce the bacterial burden in airways of patients with bronchiectasis. He is the Principal Investigator at OHSU for clinical and research centers in bronchiectasis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, and AAT deficiency. Dr. Barker has been recognized as a regional and national expert on AAT deficiency and in the treatment of patients with AAT deficiency with augmentation therapy and has published numerous journal articles on the subject. He is currently a Principal Investigator of a multi-center study of genetic modifiers in AAT deficiency. In addition, Dr. Barker is also recognized as an expert on bronchiectasis
