OHSU Shares Neurosciences Knowledge with the Community
OHSU is a major sponsor of Brain Awareness Season, with activities that span an entire month each year. This community outreach effort includes:
- Six public lectures
- A teachers' workshop
- An interactive Brain Fair
- A Neurosciences Town Hall
The OHSU Neurosciences are proud to partner with The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neuroscience, Oregon Chapter, to celebrate the progress of brain research and advance its goals during Brain Awareness Season each winter. As the host of the country's biggest and best series of Brain Awareness events, OHSU offers public lectures, exhibits, school programs and competitions that help children and adults alike understand the brain better and recognize the importance of maintaining good brain health throughout life.
During a six-week run between early February and mid-March, OHSU Brain Awareness Season draws more than 200 of the world's best and brightest neuroscientists -- including many right in the Portland metropolitan area -- who entertain while they educate. The celebration draws over 10,000 people, who fill lecture halls and auditoriums at OHSU, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and in downtown Portland. Among the attractions are public lectures, a hands-on Brain Fair for children and adults, a neuroscience town hall, and parent and teacher workshops. There also is a Brain Bowl that features teams of high school students from across Oregon who compete in a spirited, Jeopardy-style competition to test their knowledge of neuroscience.
OHSU will continue to be a major supporter of Brain Awareness Season and its efforts to advance the understanding and awareness of the brain.
