Occupational Health Psychology

Occupational health psychology (OHP) is a relatively new field that has emerged around the globe to address the well-being of workers. OHP applies psychological theory and research for the purpose of improving the quality of work life of workers by decreasing stress, injury, and illness. With the focus on protecting and promoting the safety, health, and well being of workers, OHP is growing into an important discipline within the Occupational Safety and Health field. Summer Institute General Information

The 1st Annual OHP Summer Institute features regional, national, and international researchers and practitioners in occupational health and safety research and practice. Faculty and graduate students in OHP, OHS, HR, and related fields, safety and health managers, occupational health nurses, human resources / benefits / training managers, Union representatives, and workers’ compensation consultants are invited to attend.

Introduction to OHP, the public health model and history: Prevention and Interventions
This session will provide an overview of the Occupational Health Psychology, the public health model of prevention and its historical roots. Additionally, an introduction to the topics that will be presented on subsequent days will be provided.

Safety Climate and Workplace Accident Prevention Research at LMRIS
Dr. Yueng-hsiang (Emily) Huang is a senior research scientist at Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, USA. She received her PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology/Systems Science from Portland  State University. She conducts both laboratory and field research in areas such as occupational injury and accident prevention, and organizational culture and climate. Currently, her research interests involve organizational safety climate and culture in the trucking and utility industries of which she will be speaking to.

Work organization, stress, and employee health: Prevention and Interventions
This session will provide an overview on both thework factors that increase employee stress and conflict as well as the work factors that can improve employee well-being and health. We will review models of stress & healthy workplaces. Using the ABLE (Achieving Balance in Life & Employment) Program as an example, we will identify how components of these models can be incorporated into successful workplace initiatives and interventions.

This session will define wellness, describe the concept of an integrated wellness program, and examine the link between safety, workers’ compensation and wellness. We’ll explore return on investment of such programs and identify a range of resources available to organizations for developing an integrated corporate wellness program. The session will also introduce the NIOSH Healthy Workforce Centers of Excellence and will describe Center resources for both research and implementation of wellness efforts.

Work/Non-Work Issues: Prevention and Interventions
This session will cover the general background on workplace factors associated with work/non-work stress, and the clear relationship of such stress to both organizational and individual health outcomes. An introduction to a large-scale, evidence-based, national effort at developing workplace policies and practices to help reduce work-family stress will be presented. Finally, specific strategies that workplaces can implement to help reduce work/non-work stress and improve work-life balance will be presented.

Using Organizational Climate as an Assessment Tool: A Case Study in Manufacturing

Aligning Safety and Organizational Culture: Lessons from a Construction Firm 
Safety climate and culture do not exist in a vacuum nor are they static. This presentation will address experiences of aligning safety and health with the mission and business goals of a construction organization. The construction industry offers particular challenges of multiple and varying project environments, transient workforces, and tiered contract relationships. In this context we'll discuss the development and implementation of safety interventions and the application of safety climate measurement instruments to assess impact and adjust strategies.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received by June 1, 2012 will be fully refunded minus a 10% administrative fee. Cancellations received between June 2, 2012 and June 30, 2012 will be refunded 50% of their registration fee. Cancellations received after June 30, 2012 will not be eligible for a refund.
