OHSU

Education and Outreach

The ORhwc, funded in September, 2011, has both outreach and education programs that build on existing programs at OHSU/CROET, Portland State University and the University of Oregon's Labor Education and Research Center (LERC).  The programs are housed at OHSU/CROET.

  • The Outreach program is led by Dede Montgomery (OHSU/CROET)
  • The Education program is led by Steve Hecker (UO/LERC)
  • ORhwc Center Manager Kendra Evans is the point of contact for the Education programs
  • Dan Austin supports the website and symposia

EDUCATION PROGRAM - Steve Hecker (UO/LERC)

The ORhwc Education project, beginning in September, 2011, will:

  1. Build a community of interest and a community of practice on Total Worker Health (WorkLife) issues through innovative and participatory education programs
  2. Connect the work of work-life researchers with practitioners in occupational health, health promotion, human resources, and labor relations
  3. Promote regular interchange among researchers to optimize critical feedback and sharing of methods, experiences, and results
  4. Identify new areas of cross-disciplinary collaboration of Center PIs and staff on all projects
  5. Provide educational opportunities on both the overarching theoretical constructs that guide our work and the current policy issues surrounding health promotion and health protection
  6. Include underserved populations in educational activities by designing programs to reach these groups in their own communities and through their own organizations

Educational Activites (annual)

  • 4 seminars on health promotion/health protection as part of the CROET seminar series
  • chalk-talks for all pilot, translational and research projects every 6 months
  • summer institute on TotalWorkerHealth issues at Portland State University (Leslie Hammer, lead)
  • 2 mini-symposia focused on major policy issues in health promotion and health protection
  • summer internships (undergraduates) supporting each of the research and intervention projects

OUTREACH PROGRAM - Dede Montgomery (OHSU/CROET)

The goal of the outreach program is ensuring that:

  1. The PIs and staff are broadening their horizons by talking with each other and building value from the Center’s existence by learning about each other’s research and capitalizing on opportunities to collaborate or from stakeholders
  2. Information about the ORhwc is getting out to the stakeholders and that the stakeholders are feeding back reactions, needs and opportunities
  3. ORhwc staff are interacting with stakeholders and disseminating information and products to them.
