Research Interests

My role is to direct CROET’s Toxicology Information Center (TIC). The TIC provides a vital outreach function to citizens and professionals by responding to their inquiries about the potential hazards from exposure to chemicals and other agents. The goal is to provide up-to-date, unbiased information in a form that is understandable and useful to the patron. I also serve as consultant to the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Pesticide Analytical and Response Center (PARC), which is legislatively mandated to address pesticide-related incidents in Oregon that have suspected health or environmental effects (http://www.oregon.gov/ODA/PEST/parc.shtml), and am a co-investigator with the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC), a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-sponsored project operated cooperatively with Oregon State University. NPIC provides objective, science-based information about pesticides and pesticide-related topics to enable people to make informed decisions about pesticides and their use (http://npic.orst.edu/).

 

Biography

Dr. Berman obtained his DVM from Washington State University in 1982. He practiced farm and companion animal medicine for 9 years before returning to Oregon State University to obtain his Ph.D in toxicology. Dr. Berman joined the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia in 1997 as an Assistant Research Scientist, where he conducted studies on the neuropharmacology of novel opiate, cannabinoid and adenosine receptor agents, performed original research on the neurotoxicology of marine algal toxins, and taught pharmacology to second year veterinary students. He joined CROET in 2001 as a Research Associate and Director of the Toxicology Information Center (TIC).
