Hyunjee Kim brings focus on reimbursement systems

Hyunjee Kim, a research economist specializing in long-term care and healthcare financing, arrived at the Center for Health Systems Effectiveness on September 3. Kim, whose PhD dissertation at University of Michigan was titled "Health Care Providers' Response to Payment Incentives: Evidence from Medicare Home Health Care," will contribute to CHSE's CCO evaluation project and also continue her current work on Medicare home health programs.

"Oregon has been known as the state with the best healthcare financing system, so I wanted to learn more about it and help evaluate how the current changes are working," Kim said.

Kim's interest in long-term care developed while she was volunteering with older adults in rural Korea. Many of the elders she worked with had spent their lives in agriculture and felt isolated and lonely when adult children moved away. This motivated her to pursue an MSW in social work in the United States. While in that program, she realized economics offered a useful framework and tools to develop better models of care for older populations.
