OHSU provides tobacco cessation services for patients in the hospital and ambulatory clinics. Here is how they work:
In the hospital
- Nursing staff

- Education patients who smoke using “A Message from Your Nurse” and document in the Patient Education Record.
- Send a “Nurse referral tobacco cessation” in the Orders Manager to order a consult with the tobacco cessation nurse practitioner.
Go to Helping Nurses Help Smokers for more information.
- Physicians
-
- Review tobacco use during admission history and physical
- Order tobacco cessation medications for smokers
- Order “IP consult to tobacco cessation practitioner” in the Orders Manager to order a consult with the tobacco cessation nurse practitioner.
The Smoking Cessation Consult Service receives orders via Epic patient list and responds with a bedside consult and treatment plan usually within 24 hours. Consult hours are M-F, 8:30 – 5:00.
In ambulatory practices
- Medical assistants review smoking status and update in Epic
- Clinicians review smoking and quitting history during review of systems, recommend treatment, write prescriptions, and refer to services, usually the Oregon Tobacco Quitline.
