Crystal Butcher, Outpatient Pharmacy
June 2014 Golden Rose Recipient
Nomination submitted by Matt Storm, Center for Hematologic Malignancies
Crystal is a superstar. Getting insurance companies to cover chemotherapy for patients is like pulling teeth, and you routinely have to jump through several hoops. Even after all that work, claims still get denied which throws a wrench into treatment plans. Crystal is so incredible at her job in the Specialty Pharmacy. She takes personal responsibility to ensure each patient she encounters can either get the medication they need from OHSU, or knows some way to make sure they don't go without. Coming from a clinic that writes prescriptions for new medications and tons of chemo, she has been an invaluable contact in the pharmacy and is very much appreciated!” Working in transplant services we serve a very unique population. Our patients have a bevy of medications that some will have to be on for the rest of their lives. One occasion, a patient encountered challenges staying on top of their medications. Crystal took the time to call the patient a few times per week to remind them of meds they were is due for. The patient was very complex and often took a lot of her time, but Crystal was extremely patient and very thorough in answering their questions. There’s no doubt in my mind that this patient would have relapsed or at the very least spent many more nights in the inpatient unit. Her commitment to patient care is exemplary as she goes above and beyond the call of duty.
