OHSU offers a wide range of educational programs, support groups and services for those living with and beyond cancer. See details and and registration information below for the following classes:

 


Food For Life

Nutrition and cooking class for cancer prevention and survival

This 4-week series covers a variety of cancer-related nutrition topics and demonstrates how to prepare meals loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals, high-fiber and low-fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives. The series also includes a session on healthy weight maintenance and meal planning. Each class includes a 10-minute nutrition video followed by an hour-long cooking demonstration and sampling of the food prepared. Classes are open to cancer survivors, friends, family, and anyone interested in cancer prevention and healthy eating.

Living Well With Cancer

Gain real-life skills for living a full, healthy life

This six-week workshop is recommended for people living with any type of cancer and their family or friends.

Sessions are fun and interactive. Participants share their successes and build a common source of support. Activities create confidence around regaining control of your life, gaining relief from symptoms, staying active and enjoying life.

Facilitators: Andrea Moyle, M.S.W., and Sue Frymark, R.N.

Workshop leaders are trained in the evidence-based Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) method developed by Stanford University.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Class

For People Healing from Cancer and their Caregivers

Each class will involve meditation instruction and practice, group discussions, and educational presentations on the relationships between stress, health and mindfulness. Classes may include very gentle yoga postures. Participants are given a course workbook and CDs for home practice.

Benefits of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
This course is based on the national model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the UMass Medical Center. Two decades of published research shows that most people who complete the course report an increased ability to relax, reductions in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with pain, increased ability to cope with stress and lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms.

About the Instructor
Kimberly Carson, M.P.H., R.Y.T., is a health educator who specializes in using meditation and yoga with people with medical concerns. She currently teaches Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at OHSU's March Wellness and has previously taught MBSR at Duke University Medical Center, University of North Carolina Hospitals, and the University of Florida.

Women's Writing Workshops

The OHSU Center for Women's Health invites you to join with other women who have been diagnosed with cancer for a writing workshop.

This writing group will offer a confidential and relaxed setting to write stories that encourage health and healing. Participants will be invited to write in response to exercises and then to read their writing if they choose. Fellow writers will have the opportunity to positively respond to another's writing. This writing group will employ the Amherst Writers & Artists method (info at amherstwriters.com) and thus provide a safe and empowering environment to creatively explore your thoughts and feelings through writing.

Workshop leader, SuEllen Pommier, Ph.D. is an assistant professor, OHSU Division of Surgical Oncology. She is trained in the Amherst Writers & Artists method.

Yoga for Women With Cancer

In partnership with the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute

Taught by a nationally certified cancer yoga teacher and assisted by an OHSU oncology nurse and physical therapist.

Come join other women in a supportive environment designed to nourish you. We will engage in gentle stretching, strength building, breathing exercises, deep relaxation with guided imagery, and some aspects of meditation.

Women in any stage of healing from cancer (at least 6 weeks post-surgery) are welcome. A signed release from your primary cancer care provider is required. Space is limited. Call 503 494-4580 to register now!
