Free Screening Program
This could be the year that we eliminate cervical cancer in Oregon.
In its first two years, the Free Screening Program (formerly called Free Fridays) has become one of OHSU's most successful outreach efforts. Women have come from hundreds of miles away to take advantage of this rare opportunity, and more than 30 local organizations have sent underserved clients.
Starting in 2007, OHSU and the Center for Women's Health have sponsored screening events aimed at providing basic women's health screenings: a pap, pelvic and clinical breast exam. Volunteer doctors and nurse practitioners provided the exams. Volunteers also helped make the clinic function in all the other necessary ways. The very few paid employees were paid by donated funds
In 2009, we improved our screening model and integrated the free screening program into regular clinic operations. Women interested in screening are now offered appointments throughout the month on various days and times, making it easier to fit into a busy schedule.
- So far, 2,323 women state-wide, most uninsured or underinsured, have received screenings.
- 1,253 have been screened at the OHSU Center for Women's Health.
- Between 10% and 20% of those screened discovered they had breast or cervical abnormalities that needed immediate attention.
The Free Screening Program has been made possible through a partnership with women of our community who raised the funds to begin the program, the support of the OHSU Cancer Institute and volunteers from numerous OHSU departments as well as tremendous support from the community at large.
