TelAbortion Study

eIRB study # 15974

Why is this study being done?

In a standard medical abortion, a woman must visit the abortion provider in person at least once. However, women may find it challenging to reach an abortion provider due to distance, the costs of travel, the need for childcare, lost wages, or for other reasons. In this study, women will be evaluated by videoconference, and if they are eligible, the medical abortion pills will be sent in the mail. Women will obtain an ultrasound and other test at facilities near their homes before and after the procedure. The study will use the same FDA-approved medicines that are used for all medical abortions at OHSU.

The purpose of this study is:
  • To assess service provision of medical abortion through telemedicine

  • To improve access to abortion for women who may find it challenging or inconvenient to come for an in-person visit with an abortion provider

You may qualify for this study if you:

  • Are pregnant and want a medical abortion
  • Live in Oregon or Washington State
  • Are not more than 70 days (10 weeks) pregnant at the time of study enrollment
  • Have access to a computer with a webcam and microphone
  • Can speak and understand English

Compensation:

Qualified participants will not pay any out-of-pocket costs for care received at OHSU. You or your insurance carrier may be responsible for services obtained elsewhere. You will get $50 once you complete your follow-up consultation.
