June is here! The days are long, and the sun is bright. As we venture into the sunny outdoors, it’s important to remember that too much sun can be harmful to our skin.
Did you know that Oregon has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the country? And that (according to the CDC) the melanoma death rate for women in Oregon is the highest in the country? This may be related in part to the high proportion of Oregonians with fair skin (a known risk factor for melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer), and the intense, episodic UV exposure we sustain during our fleeting, but intense, sunny summer months. CWH Celebrates Ten Years in the Kohler Pavilion
This month the Center for Women’s Health celebrates its 10th anniversary in its uniquely designed Kohler Pavilion location.
Thanks to community efforts, the Center was able to move into our extraordinary space in the Kohler Pavilion in 2006. Intended as a hub for a “one-stop shop” for women’s healthcare, the idea for the CWH was born in 1997. The move into the Kohler Pavilion quadrupled our physical space and enabled us to provide a full spectrum of women’s healthcare services with key clinical specialties in one site. Read more
Women Who Inspire: M. Susan Smith
Dr. M. Susan Smith, professor emeritus of physiology and pharmacology in the OHSU School of Medicine, was the Center for Women’s Health’s founding Director. She helped to develop and implement the original vision for the Center in 1997, when very few women’s health centers existed in America.
