For Providers

Making a referral

Thank you for considering a referral of your patient for transition-related care at OHSU. The Transgender Health Program is an umbrella program for many different clinical services at OHSU; it is not a clinic that accepts direct referrals.

If you are planning to refer your patient to medical or surgical services, please review the referral requirements and insurance eligibility with the appropriate clinic below.

OHSU providers practice according to the guidelines set forth by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and the Standards of Care, Version 7.

Hormone therapy

Pediatric

For pediatric/adolescent patients seeking interventions including puberty blockers or hormone therapies, we recommend a referral to Pediatric Endocrinology.

These services can also be offered through some of the OHSU outreach clinics listed on the Pediatric Endocrinology web site.

Adult

The Transgender Health Program encourages the patient’s primary care provider to manage hormone therapies for adults whenever possible. This prevents unnecessary disruptions in care and reduces travel time for patients residing outside of the Portland area.

For providers who are new to prescribing hormones, the Transgender Health Program can provide resources, technical assistance, and options for consultation.

Specialty intervention

For patients who require specialty intervention for hormone therapies with co-occurring complex endocrine care, patients can be referred to specialist Chaim Vanek, M.D. in the Department of Endocrinology.
