Physical Therapy

The physical therapists at the OHSU Spine Center have specialized training in prescribing the right exercises for spinal conditions. Your therapist tracks your progress with information designed to measure spine health. When you are confident that you can exercise on your own, we help you start exercising independently.

Exercise and training for disc degeneration includes:

  • Spine mobility and flexibility exercises
  • Strengthening exercises for your back, abdominal muscles and hips
  • Exercises that place less stress on your spine (swimming, cycling, walking)
  • Learning how to move to avoid stressing your spine
  • Learning how to lift correctly to protect your spine
  • Learning to manage pain episodes
  • Learning how to protect your joints
  • Pool therapy
  • Learning which nerves are irritated and how to protect them
