Congenital spinal malformations are spine conditions caused by birth defects. They include:
- Cerebral palsy, caused by brain damage
- Muscular dystrophy, caused by a gene defect
- Spina bifida, caused by lack of folic acid
These conditions usually develop before birth, but may not cause symptoms until your child is older. Symptoms include:
- Problems moving (rolling over, walking, jumping)
- Weak muscles
- Problems with speech, hearing or vision
- Other symptoms
Symptoms of congenital spinal malformation are different for each person. Make an appointment at OHSU Spine Center to speak with a spine specialist about treatment options.
