Families of these children are often under a great deal of stress and one of my primary goals is to help them cope with a very difficult situation. Even when we don’t have a cure for some diseases we continue to provide comfort for the patient and support for the family through our palliative care team."
Biography
Dr. Thomas specializes in caring for children with cancer and blood problems. He is the medical director of the Bridges Pediatric Palliative Care Program at Doernbecher Children's Hospital which provides care and support to children and young adults whose lives may be shortened by illness or injury and their families. In both pediatric oncology and palliative care Dr. Thomas greatly values his relationships with children and families undergoing very difficult challenges. Dr. Thomas also has an interest in patients with blood clotting problems and with abnormalities of hemoglobin, the main protein in red blood cells. When he is away from work, Dr. Thomas enjoys backpacking, long distance hiking, and traveling with his wife, a research dietician at OHSU. Closer to home he enjoys riding his bicycle to work, reading, and cooking.
