Biography
Dr. O'Rourke is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the UCLA Medical School, the USCF Surgery Residency Program, and the Legacy Health System Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship. This extensive training history provides Dr. O'Rourke with expertise in all aspects of advanced laparoscopic foregut surgery. Dr. O'Rourke's primary clinical focus is bariatric surgery for morbid obesity, and he acts as Co-Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at OHSU. Dr. O'Rourke has experience in laparoscopic and open gastric bypass, gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. Dr. O'Rourke also has expertise in esophageal and gastric surgery, including the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, paraesophageal hernia, and achalasia. His combined interest in these areas positions him as an expert in the treatment of esophageal disease in the morbidly obese. Dr. O'Rourke also has extensive experience in laparoscopic and open inguinal hernia repair. Dr. O'Rourke also manages a research effort which studies the role of immunity and inflammation in the pathogenesis of obesity-related diseases including diabetes. His research has been funded by local and national surgical and research societies and has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications. Dr. O'Rourke is also active in resident and medical student education, and in advanced minimally invasive surgery training. He serves on multiple national surgical society committees and as a reviewer for multiple academic journals.
