"I have been serving children and adults living with Spina Bifida and other disabilities for over two decades. My own congenital heart condition has given me insight and motivation, and my passion is to work with families who now live a different experience."
Biography
Dr. Merkens specializes in the care of children with chronic health conditions and disabilities. He focuses on spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and feeding disabilities. He is by temperament a team physician, working with other health professionals at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center to generate comprehensive care of these complex conditions. Dr. Merkens and his wife, Louise s. Merkens, PhD, have been working in the Department of Pediatrics for over thirty years, he on patient care, she on research into metabolic conditions affecting children. Their children are recently fledged into science and engineering. Dr. Merkens is an avid outdoors person. He kayaks near their cabin at Netarts, hikes on Mt. Hood, and immerses in all winter sports (after all, he’s from Buffalo).
