Biography

Dr. LaFranchi has been a member of the OHSU Department of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology since he completed residency and fellowship training in 1975. He served as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology from 1975 until 2001. His major clinical interests include childhood diabetes and disorders of growth, puberty, and thyroid disorders. Dr. LaFranchi serves as the pediatric endocrinology consultant to the Northwest Regional Newborn Screening Program; he is responsible for follow-up of babies with congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Dr. LaFranchi has served on many professional society committees, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Endocrine Society. He has served as an officer, including President of the Portland Academy of Pediatrics and Treasurer and then President of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society. He has a long-standing interest in teaching and research, but he enjoys most caring for children.

Dr. LaFranchi lives in Portland with his wife, Pam Fisher, MD (a pediatrician) and their two sons. He is active with their school activities, including serving as a youth soccer and lacrosse coach. Family hobbies include biking, fishing, and gardening.
