"My role is to provide my patients with the information needed for them to make their best decisions and to individualize their care so they can see their choices within the context of their life."
Elizabeth Kavanaugh has a special interest in supporting normal birth and also in the care of Latinas. Her professional interests include low intervention birth, health disparities and international health. She gets great satisfaction from seeing women at every life stage empowered by good health care decisions. Elizabeth values the blend of art and science in the practice of midwifery at OHSU. Elizabeth feels extremely honored to be present with families for the utterly amazing experience of childbirth.
Originally from San Francisco, but an Oregonian since 1976, Elizabeth decided to practice at OHSU in 1988 because of the diverse patient population. After 12 years of labor and delivery nursing, Elizabeth became a Certified Nurse-Midwife in 1999. She loves working with the variety of cultures and care scenarios present at OHSU. When Elizabeth is not at work, she loves watching her three children do whatever they do.
PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH PHILOSOPHY
"Pregnancy and birth are normal physiologic events. While a healthy mother and baby are the ultimate goals, the process of arriving there is a vital part of the experience. There are a wide range of safe options that support this process and a woman's choice is the best place to start in facilitating the process."
