Samer G. Mattar, M.D., FACS, FRCS (Edin.), FASMBS is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the OHSU Bariatric Services Program.

Dr. Mattar's areas of interest include the optimization of outcomes of weight loss surgery, including the improvement, or cure, of the many diseases that are associated with being overweight; bariatric surgery in adolescents; the treatment of patients with relapsed weight gain and high-risk bariatric patients; laparoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other diseases of the foregut; endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of foregut diseases; and laparoscopic treatment of ventral hernias.

Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Mattar served as Professor of Surgery at Indiana University where he was also the Director of the Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery Training Program. His specialized training included 2 years as research fellow and clinical instructor in the Endosurgery unit at Emory University School of Medicine, having completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Cairo University.

Dr. Mattar is board certified in surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Central Surgical Society and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He holds leadership positions at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, The Obesity Society, and the Fellowship Council.
