As a certified nurse-midwife ("CNM"), Tom Lloyd works with the Ob/Gyn Generalist practice in the Center for Women's Health. In partnership with ob/gyn physicians, Tom specializes in the care of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. He also sees patients for well-woman care throughout the reproductive years.
Tom grew up "among the lakes and Live Oaks" of Orlando, Florida, before there was a Disney World. During his college years he spent a year in Tennessee working as a carpenter for the Upper Cumberland Development District putting running water and bathrooms in the backwoods homes of Appalachia. There, in hills of Tennessee, he met a nurse-midwife and decided on a career.
In midwifery school, during an externship experience, Tom experienced Oregon and the great Northwest for the first time. After completing midwifery school at the University of Utah, Tom returned to Florida and worked with the underserved population in the county clinic system of Dade County, and, as a staff midwife at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the teaching hospital for the University of Miami. He returned to the West as faculty in the midwifery program at University of Utah; however, he had his sights on Oregon. He accepted a faculty position in OHSU's midwifery program. After 6 years on faculty, he left OHSU to serve as the State of Oregon's first Perinatal Coordinator. He was the first Lead Midwife in the midwifery service at Kaiser Permanente, and after a 20-year career there, Tom returned to OHSU. Tom has helped thousands of women welcome their babies into the world.
