Melissa Hayden was born in Boston, Massachusetts but moved to Vermont before she was a year old, and, despite her parents’ best efforts, she had a Boston accent until about age 3. She grew up in the green mountains of Vermont, playing in Lake Champlain, hiking and skiing with her younger sister, Lauren. Melissa attended Bowdoin College in coastal Brunswick, Maine where she majored in biology. After graduation, she headed down to Boston for a taste of the “big city life” and worked in clinical research in the breast cancer clinic of Massachusetts General Hospital. She then returned to Vermont for medical school, better skiing, and some fresh air. During medical school at UVM, Melissa led the internal medicine interest group and participated in a research project on the Patient-Centered Medical Home, both of which helped to reinforce her interest in primary care. In her free time, Melissa enjoys traveling, hiking, biking, running, cooking, and good beer.
