Birtukan Cinnor was born and raised in Ethiopia. She left Ethiopia at 16 to attend an international high school, the Red Cross Nordic United World College, in Flekke, Norway. After obtaining her International Baccalaureate diploma in Norway, Birtukan moved to Saint Paul, MN to attend Macalester College, where she double majored in Chemistry and Biology and minored in Anthropology. While at Macalester, she ran for the women’s varsity cross country and track & field teams. She also participated in research projects in both the Chemistry and Biology departments and volunteered in a women's clinic for a few years. After graduating, Birtukan won a two-year MacArthur Fellowship to the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health where she completed her MPH with specialization in Epidemiology, focusing on the effect of BMI on the risk of type II diabetes in adolescents. During this time, Birtukan worked as a research assistant at the Minnesota Department of Health and was elected by the student body to serve as the student representative. She traveled nationally and locally to recruit students and attend conferences on behalf of the school. Birtukan then went on to attend Northwestern University, the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. During her 1st year, Birtukan was awarded a Schweitzer Fellowship and dedicated over 230 hours of volunteer work during her second year as part of the commitment to the fellowship. She is excited to train at OHSU and looks forward to finally living with her husband, Fitih Cinnor, PhD, an engineer with Intel Corp. They met during her freshman year in college and have endured 7.5 years of long distance dating/engagement/marriage. Birtukan is an avid runner and enjoys reading, cooking, cleaning and organizing. She has also recently picked up poker as a hobby, although she never bets money or other valuables. Birtukan is excited to be trained as an internist and has interest in pursuing a fellowship in either GI or Hem/Onc.
