Stephen Mehanni grew born to an Egyptian father and Canadian mother in Tanta, Egypt (although his passport will tell you Cairo). He moved frequently as a child, to Ontario, New Jersey, New York, and several small towns in Florida. He finally “settled” in Tampa, Florida, where he earned a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida. He spent the summer hiking the John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney, before beginning medical school at University of South Florida. During the next four years, Stephen was able to volunteer in a student?run free health clinic and was fortunate enough to have amazing travel opportunities. For one month, he worked in an understaffed clinic of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in southern India and, more recently, he lived in a remote area of Ethiopia, volunteering in a village clinic started by missionaries. Stephen is especially interested in a career in Infectious Diseases, because of its many global medicine opportunities. However, he is keeping his options open with regard to specializing.
