Biography

Dr. Amela Blekic completed her medical training in Bosnia and Herzegovina and worked as a general practitioner during the Bosnian war. In 1997 Dr. Blekic immigrated to the United States and was originally employed by American Red Cross.

She joined Oregon Health & Science University, Department of Psychiatry, in August 1999 and worked at Intercultural Psychiatric Program establishing Bosnian Clinic for Mental Health within that program. In working with severely traumatized refugees, Dr. Blekic realized her passion for psychiatry and after completing the United States Medical Licensing Examination, she started Psychiatry Residency Training at Oregon Health & Science University in 2005.

She completed her training in June 2009. The last year of the training she served as a chief resident, when she had an opportunity to assist her colleagues in managing the challenges of the residency training and be a liaison between the residents and the training office.

After the graduation Dr. Blekic’s involvement with the Department of Psychiatry continued as a faculty member working at Intercultural Psychiatric Program. In addition she worked in the State Hospital in Salem caring for chronically mentally ill. She also served as a psychiatrist for Oregon Health & Science University Student Health Service where she treated student population at the university.

In 2011, Dr. Blekic was appointed as Interim Medical Director of the inpatient psychiatric unit at OHSU. Dr. Blekic most recently has been working in a combination of assignments on the inpatient unit, consultation liaison, and Intercultural Psychiatric Program. She is an Assistant Professor in our Psychiatry Department. As Interim Medical Director she supervises both residents and attending psychiatrists on an acute 20-bed unit.

Dr. Blekic is a naturalized US citizen and is board certified in psychiatry. The areas of interest include work with chronically mentally ill, cross cultural psychiatry and work with severely traumatized refugees, resident and student wellness, and teaching. She believes it is important to advocate daily for our patients and their care and she sees that as a life-long assignment.
