"A personalized, compassionate and holistic approach to medical care is the best option available for our patients. It is a pleasure to work at an institution where the human resources and the latest technologies converge to make this a reality."

Dr. Lopez-Chavez specializes in the use of novel molecular tools and targeted therapies for the care of patients with malignancies of the thorax, including lung and breast cancer, mesothelioma and thymic malignancies. By personalizing treatments based on the unique patient characteristics and the molecular and cellular changes that are specific to the cancer, Dr. Lopez-Chavez aims to find cancer therapies that may be more effective than other types of treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and less harmful to the patients.

In collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Lopez-Chavez is leading a cutting edge clinical trial that allows patients with all types of lung cancer and thymic malignancies, to have their cancer undergo an extensive panel of molecular tests and then receive treatment with targeted therapies based on the results of such analysis. This is a very unique clinical trial that offers patients the opportunity to receive truly personalized cancer care and is only available at OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

In addition, Dr. Lopez-Chavez is involved in several innovative and promising clinical trials focusing on personalized therapies for breast cancer patients, including the world renowned I-SPY 2 clinical trial. I-SPY 2 is a collaborative research effort that uses genetic and biological markers from individual breast patients’ tumors to screen several promising new treatments simultaneously and allows doctors to quickly measure the effectiveness of the treatment prior to removing the tumor.

Before joining OHSU, Dr. Lopez-Chavez trained and practiced at the National Cancer Institute, Georgetown University Hospital and the National Naval Medical Center where he received the “Top Medical Oncology Provider for Exceptional Customer Service” award, based on patient satisfaction surveys from his outpatient clinic which primarily focused on lung and breast cancer patients.

Dr. Lopez-Chavez has received numerous awards for his academic accomplishments, excellence in teaching and for his service to underserved populations. He is a member of the board of directors of Project Access NOW and Familias en Accion, two organizations devoted to provide access to health care for low income and uninsured people in the Portland metropolitan area.

In his spare time, Dr. Lopez-Chavez enjoys hiking and exploring the beautiful Oregon outdoors with his family, attending art performances in downtown Portland, participating in local community outreach groups and supporting sustainable community activities.
