Biography

Dr. Daneshmand completed a two-year fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Southern California following his residency at the same institution. He earned his medical degree at the University of California, Davis. His clinical interests include bladder cancer , prostate cancer, advanced kidney and testis cancers, as well as retroperitoneal tumors. Dr. Daneshmand has extensive experience in urinary diversion and reconstruction following surgical removal of the bladder (radical cystectomy) as well as nerve-sparing RPLND (retroperitoneal lymph node dissection) following chemotherapy for advanced testis cancer. He performs more radical cystectomies and RPLNDs per year than most surgeons on the west coast.

He is actively involved in both clinical and basic science research on urologic malignancies. His research interests include the role of lymph node dissection in urological malignancies, imaging in bladder cancer, recurrent cancers and surgical management of advanced testis and kidney cancers. Dr. Daneshmand believes in a multidisciplinary approach for cancer patients, with regular interactions with faculty from Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Pathology.

Dr. Daneshmand strongly believes in spending ample time with patients and their family in order to discuss their cancer diagnosis and treatment options. Family support is very important when making major treatment decisions and he believes that all patients have options, whether it’s surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of the three treatments. He explains cancer staging systems and uses anatomic diagrams as well as the patient's own CT scans to show them the extent of the disease and what surgical approach is used to eradicate the cancer. Patient understanding of urinary tract reconstruction is paramount to successful outcomes in pelvic reconstructive surgery. Dr. Daneshmand believes it is crucial that patients also understand the complication rates and side effects for each procedure or treatment in order to make informed decisions. He carefully explains the risks and benefits of surgical treatments so the patient as well as the patient's family are well informed.
