Transfusion Service

The Transfusion Service is part of the Division of Laboratory Medicine of the Department of Pathology, and is responsible for provision of blood, components, products and services. The Department of Pathology requires that the Medical Director have appropriate post-graduate training and/or experience in transfusion medicine per CLIA. The Transfusion Service Medical Director services as the liaison between the Transfusion Service ad the hospital medical staff and is responsible for assuring all operations assure the safety, quality, purity, potency and effectiveness of all transfused products. The Medical Director assures that policies and procedures are current and represent best medical practices. The Transfusion Service complies with the Department of Pathology Quality Policies to insure quality services. The Medical Director is responsible for compliance with requirements of all regulating agencies including the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare organizations (JCAHO), the Collect of American Pathologists (CP), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). 

Transfusion Medicine faculty are available for consultation on a 24 hour basis with assistance from members of the Pathology Residency Program. Laboratory technologists and assistants cover Transfusion Service 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. The Transfusion Service is located on the fourth floor of Dillehunt Hall, Room 4025.
