Heart Surgery

The Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery at OHSU focuses on the treatment of acquired diseases affecting the heart and great vessels. Our surgeons, all of whom are board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgeons, along with our entire team, are advancing the care of patients with heart disease by employing innovative and less invasive surgical techniques. We serve as a regional resource for the care of patients with advanced diseases requiring complex treatments. In addition to on- and off-pump coronary artery bypass procedures, our surgeons perform a large volume of complex heart valve repair and replacement procedures, aneurysm repairs, and procedures for heart failure. We also offer a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of disorders of the thoracic aorta. Our core mission is to provide all of our patients and their families with the best possible care through outstanding surgical results as well as through comprehensive and compassionate care.

Dr. Howard Song - Cardiac Surgery

Some of the services we provide:

Coronary artery disease: Coronary artery bypass procedures are undertaken with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass and on the beating heart. Innovative techniques are incorporated to make this procedure as safe as possible. Patient outcomes such as length of stay and need for blood transfusions are continuously evaluated to assure that surgical results remain outstanding.

Valvular heart disease: Our surgeons perform a large volume of heart valve replacements and repairs. Advanced repair techniques, such as the Ross procedure, are utilized so that native heart valve tissue can be preserved whenever possible.

Arrhythmia: The adult cardiac surgery team at OHSU performs ablative procedures to treat arrhythmia disorders. Specifically, our surgeons offer innovative, minimally invasive techniques such as the MAZE Procedure to treat atrial fibrillation.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections: The Thoracic Aorta Program at OHSU offers expertise in the medical, surgical, stent, and other minimally invasive management of all types of acute and chronic aortic problems, including aneurysms, Type A and Type B dissection, and aortic root reconstruction.

Dr. Guyton - Cardiac SurgeryHeart failure/Transplantation: Our surgeons perform an array of procedures for patients with advanced heart failure. Cardiac assist devices are implanted as a bridge to transplantation and as destination therapy. OHSU has been designated as a regional Center of Excellence for patients requiring cardiac assist devices. OHSU is the largest heart transplant program in the region.
