Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Coronary artery bypass surgery is a procedure that restores blood flow to the heart muscle by diverting the flow of blood around the section of a blocked artery (or arteries) in the heart.

Miguel Martinez - Triple Bypass SurvivorA coronary artery bypass graft (CABG, pronouced "cabbage")is a surgical treatment option for a blocked or diseased artery in the heart. A healthy vein or artery called a "graft" is taken from the leg, arm, or chest and used to connect blood vessels near the blocked or diseased area. This allows blood to bypass the blocked artery.

At OHSU Knight Cardiovascular Institute, our heart surgeons can perform CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) - a heart-lung bypass pump that breathes and pumps blood for you during the surgery - or surgery can be performed on the beating heart, known as off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery (OPCAB).

It is our commitment to provide you with the experience and skill necessary to carry out these procedures in the safest, most effective way. Our heart surgeons use innovative techniques, and we constantly evaluate the outcomes for all our patients to make sure our results remain outstanding.
