Meet our heart failure care team
Dr. Howard Song is Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Surgery Director for the Heart Failure and Transplant Program at OHSU. He is an expert in heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices and has performed more of these procedures than any surgeon in the region.
Treatment options for heart failure
Heart failure occurs most commonly when the heart does not contract with enough force, which means the heart fails to pump as much blood as the body needs to function. When this occurs, the body does not receive adequate oxygen which can cause a back-up in the lungs and veins which will eventually increase the severity of the heart condition.
There are numerous causes of heart failure but our team of experts will work together to find the right treatment for each patient.
Heart failure treatment options include:
- Augmented medical therapy
- Continuous inotropic therapy
- Heart transplantation
- Ventricular assist devices
- Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
When non-surgical treatments aren't enough, a heart transplant may be the only option. OHSU cardiac surgeons are leading experts in their field and have performed hundreds of heart transplants with great success.
