The first completely successful artificial heart valve was co-invented and implanted by surgeon Albert Starr at OHSU in 1960. His innovation with engineer Lowell Edwards transformed the treatment of valvular heart disease and changed the landscape of the medical device industry.
OHSU continues to lead the way in valve treatment with cutting-edge therapies such as percutaneous (catheter-based) interventions – a revolutionary option for treating valve failure without open heart surgery. OHSU is the only hospital in Oregon and one of only a small number of programs in the country to offer percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation. OHSU also performed one of the nation's first non-investigational transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) using the transapical approach in which a catheter is inserted through a small incision between the ribs.
