Skull Base Surgery- Otology, Neurotology, and Vestibular Disorders

Dr Frank Warren is the chief the division of Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery. He is an expert in his field, and regularly presents at educational conferences and seminars.

Dr Warren’s practice focuses on the surgical treatment for diseases of hearing, facial nerve, and balance disorders, as well as the structures in the brain and skull related to these diseases. He collaborates with other specialists at OHSU to provide the best quality of care for his patients. Neurosurgery, Neurology, Radiology, Audiology, and Physical and Occupational Therapy are just a few of the specialties he regularly works with in his practice.   Dr Warren specializes in the treatment of hearing loss, acoustic neuroma, tumors of the ear and skull base, cholesteatoma, facial palsy and balance disorders.  He has active research in guided insertion of cochlear implants, minimally invasive skull base surgery and cochlear implantation.

Dr Anh Nguyen-Huynh works with Dr Warren, and is also a board-certified Neurotologist.  Dr. Anh is in charge of the Vestibular (Balance) clinic in our department. In addition to this interest, he treats all disorders of the ear including balance and dizziness problems, infection, hearing loss, vertigo, facial palsy, and tumors of temporal bone and cerebellopontine angle. He is also a very strong researcher, whose studies include the molecular genetics of Meniere Disease, finding better treatment for sudden hearing loss, and improving balance function in patients after surgery for acoustic neuroma.

Skull Base Surgery - Head, Neck and Sinus

Working with doctors from many specialties, Dr Peter Andersen, Dr Neil Gross, and Dr Timothy Smith from the Divisions of Head and Neck Surgery / Cancer and the Oregon Sinus Center, perform surgery to remove disease, including cancer, from the anterior and middle skull base regions (the base of the brain). State of the art technologies and training allow our doctors to offer surgical options that are considered "minimally invasive", which means that the surgical procedure is done through as small of an incision as is possible to treat the patient's problem. These procedures include endoscopic through the nostrils and without incisions, which allow patients to recover more quickly and without the scars normally associated with these procedures. This highly specialized approach has the potential to reduce the length of stay in the hospital with the patient, and in some instances, allowing that patient to return to work within a few days of the procedure. 

When faced with growths, tumors, or cancers of the skull base, our multi-disciplinary (many specialty) team of doctors will evaluate the patient and discuss the patient's care as a team, so that all options are considered and explained to the patient and the most appropriate treatment can be delivered.

Snoring and Sleep Disorders

Approximately 45% of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25% are habitual snorers. It is estimated that up to 40% of males over the age of 40 snore consistently. Women tend to snore less, but a significant population of women over the age of 40 will also regularly snore quite loudly. Snoring can be an indicator of a more serious disease and is known to wreak havoc on relationships. Social stigmata and the accompanying ostracism may prevent individuals from enjoying social activities such as camping, staying in hotel rooms, etc.

Snoring is no laughing matter. It may be an indication of a more serious medical problem, such as sleep apnea.
