Timothy L. Smith, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S. is Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon where he also serves as Director of the Oregon Sinus Center, Chief of Rhinology and Sinus-Skull Base Surgery, and Director of Clinical Research. Dr. Smith is actively involved in clinical practice and research and serves as the Principal Investigator of the first multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary study of outcomes of sinus surgery funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Smith has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and other scientific publications and has mentored numerous faculty, fellows, residents, and post-graduate students who have substantially advanced the field of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Triological Society and the American Rhinologic Society. He has been honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Dr. Maurice Cottle Honor Award for distinguished research from the American Rhinologic Society. He is the first American Rhinologist/Sinus Surgeon to be elected to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum (CORLAS).

Dr. Smith is a Past President of the American Rhinologic Society and has been elected to the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and to the American Board of Otolaryngology. He has served as an Associate Editor of the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology and JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and has served on the editorial boards of several other journals.

Dr. Smith’s clinical practice is limited to rhinology/nasal and sinus disorders and surgery and includes:

Kara Detwiller, MD

Kara Detwiller, MD

 Dr. Kara Detwiller is originally from New England and received a Bachelor's degree in Chinese Studies and Economics with honors at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. After working in the information technology field for several years, she decided to pursue a career in medicine. She graduated with honors from Dartmouth Medical School. She completed her Otolaryngology residency at OHSU and fellowship training in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago. She is board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. 

Dr. Detwiller works both at OHSU and the Portland VA Medical Center. Her clinical practice is focused on nasal and sinus disorders with a particular interest in chronic sinusitis, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, and allergy. 

Lindsay E. Wyant, MS, PA-C

Lindsay Wyant, MS, PA-C

Lindsay Wyant received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and went on to complete a Masters in Physician Assistant studies at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. She is nationally certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants.

She practiced with a private otolaryngology-head and neck surgery group in Portland before joining the Oregon Sinus Center team in 2007 as an Instructor. She serves as an instructor and mentor for physician assistant students and is actively involved Oregon Health & Science Physician Assistant Program. She has been treating rhinology and sinus related issues since 2004, and enjoys being a part of the Oregon Sinus Center.

Daniel Beswick, MD - Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery Fellow

Dr. Beswick completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. After spending two years in health informatics, he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for medical school and received his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 2012. Dr. Beswick completed his residency in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and a Biodesign program in medical device innovation at Stanford University. In his free time, he enjoys the outdoors and travel.

How to Make an Appointment

Please contact our office regarding scheduling appointments. Prior to scheduling an appointment, our providers often need to review chart notes related to the reason you want to be seen in order to coordinate any additional tests they may need in order to make the most of your visit.  In some cases, we will require a referral from your primary care physician.  We would be happy to discuss this with you to ensure we have all we need to expedite the scheduling process.  Please contact us by phone or email to begin the process.
