Head & Neck Surgery/Cancer - Our services

A large part of our activity is devoted to the management of head and neck cancer . We have a multi-specialty group, providing complete care to our patients, which includes dedicated head and neck medical and radiation cancer doctors (oncologists). Our doctors are all specialty trained, having to complete extensive education and training to become specialists in this form of medicine. We provide complete patient care services such as speech and swallowing rehabilitation, physical therapy, nutrition, and social work specific to head and neck cancer. If you require surgery or an inpatient (overnight) stay at OHSU, we have a head and neck inpatient unit of experienced nursing staff dedicated to your care. We also have a number of ongoing clinical trials, as we work to provide our patients with the most up-to-date and effective care possible.
Swallowing and breathing problems related to abnormalities of the upper aerodigestive tract are also a focus of the head and neck surgery program. There have been a number of advances in technology over the last few years, which help our doctors provide the best care. Video scopes, robotic surgery, micro surgery, and laparoscopic surgery are just a few of the significant advances that have been made, and which decrease scarring, invasive procedures, and which improve diagnosis and management of the diseases and cancers in this area of the body.
We provide outreach programs for the education of the public and for Oregon health professionals, with respect to diseases in this area, both through departmental activities, as well as through the American Cancer Society. The program serves the educational needs of the Graduate Medical Education programs of Oregon Health & Science University and, because of its strong relationships with all departments within OHSU, can help focus the tremendous resources of OHSU and its many related programs.
The Section of Head and Neck Surgery/Oncology also offers many opportunities for students, residents, and visiting professors to pursue basic and applied research and to participate in clinical studies. All of the doctors in the division and department participate in weekly conferences, where patient care is discussed. Our doctors work together to provide our patients with the best care, and feel that often our patients are served best when our specialists share information to determine the best, and most effective, course of treatment. These weekly conferences include doctors and specialists from neurology, neurosurgery, dermatology, pediatrics, and many other specialties.
