OHSU Doernbecher has Oregon’s only pediatric neuromuscular program, with teams of specialists to treat disorders such as muscular dystrophy, periodic paralysis and myasthenia gravis. We offer:

  • A team-based approach, with experts in neuromuscular, spine, congenital and other disorders working together to tailor treatments to your child's specific needs.

We evaluate children and teens for neuromuscular disorders when they show symptoms such as developmental delays, muscle weakness and movement abnormalities. Assessments include a complete review of your child’s medical history and a thorough physical exam. Our diagnostic services include laboratory testing, muscle and skin biopsy, and electrodiagnostic testing. 

Comprehensive care

Our specialists work together to diagnose, treat and manage your child’s condition. When needed, they have direct access to OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital specialists in genetic counseling, cardiology, pulmonary medicine and orthopaedics. Your child receives complete care all in one place.

For patients with muscular dystrophy and other disorders, Doernbecher specialists work collaboratively with Shriners Hospital for Children. Like Doernbecher, Shriners is on Marquam Hill.

Research and clinical trials

Doernbecher doctors have done extensive research on neuromuscular disorders, including clinical trials to test next-generation medications. Doernbecher and Shriners scientists are also working together on muscular dystrophy research funded by the National Institutes of Health.
