Program Information: The OHSU Surgical Weight Reduction Program has been performing bariatric surgery since 1995. We perform over 180 cases per year and provide all aspects of bariatric surgery including lap band, open and lap Roux-en-Y, Gastric Sleeve, and revisional gastric procedures. Our program has a strong commitment to quality and service excellence.

Location: Clinics and Education classes are located at the OHSU Center for Health and Healing on the south waterfront with specialized bariatric amenities to ensure patient comfort and safety.
Criteria for Eligibility: The National Institute of Health has developed criteria to determine who should be a candidate for weight loss surgery. They recommend a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40, or of at least 35 with other weight-related co-morbidities.
Program Requirements: Our program has some basic requirements that we ask of each patient:
- Attend the free educational session
- Meet with the Nurse Practitioner
- Meet with a dietician
- Have a psychological evaluation
- Meet with the surgeon. Many insurance companies also have requirements that involve pre-surgical weight loss.
How to refer a Patient: The first step is for patient to attend the free educational session put on by our Staff. These sessions are offered at least twice a month. Please contact our office for further instructions (503)494-4373
Insurance Information and Certifications: OHSU is a Center of Excellence and participates in the majority of insurance plans, for specific plans, we ask that patients call their insurance company to ask if OHSU is an approved option.
Medicare: After an extensive review by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), we have been accredited as a Level 1A Bariatric Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons. This means we are a certified Medicare center for bariatric surgery.
Public Employee Benefits Board (PEBB): We are also certified to provide Bariatric Surgery for PEBB employees and their dependents.
