Medical Background

Surgical Treatment for Obesity

For some patients, weight loss surgery is the only effective, durable treatment for obesity. According to the National Institutes of Health, "Surgery is the only way to obtain consistent, permanent weight loss for morbidly obese patients."

Surgery achieves on average, between 50 and 70 percent excess weight loss in over 95 percent of patients. In addition, many of our patients are able to achieve their ideal weight. Overall patient satisfaction with the results of bariatric surgery is over 95 percent.

Durable and Lasting Weight Loss

Furthermore, as follow-up on patients who have undergone modern bariatric surgical procedures accumulates, and is now over two decades, it is clear that this weight loss is durable, lasting decades, and is probably life-long in the vast majority of patients.

Overall Health Improvements

The majority of patients experience complete resolution of diabetes and hypertension, and are able to stop or greatly reduced their medications for these conditions. Other health problems associated with obesity, including sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and depression, also markedly improve or disappear in most patients. Finally, post-operative and long-term complication rates are very low.
