Athletes for Hope- Chris Dudley Visits Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center
On 9/11/09 Chris Dudley visited the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center and Doernbecher Children's Hospital
September 11, 2009 was a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and retired NBA player Chris Dudley volunteered his time for Athletes for Hope Day. Chris was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teen, and in 1998, formed the Chris Dudley Foundation with the mission to further improve the lives of children, teens, and young adults living with diabetes. Chris Dudley partners with other organizations, such as the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center at OHSU, to continue to empower and encourage others to follow their dreams.
Imagine the thrill of the children and families who had the opportunity to not only meet a professional basketball player, but to also have a chance to visit personally with him to talk about their experiences of living with diabetes. Chris listened to the challenges they face each day, and he could truly empathize with their experiences. He also had the chance to share his stories, also including many of his own struggles. However, he was able to give even more examples of how he continued to persevere with the support of his family, medical team, and community to reach his dreams.
One parent, who was nervous about their child participating in sports, was restored with hope and encouragement after meeting with Chris. Chris also had the chance to meet with a child who was newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and again, give the message to both the child and their family that although there may be some challenges, they can continue to achieve their goals.
Chris Dudley is truly an example of someone who lives actively and well with diabetes. His service to others and continued advocacy motivates all people living with diabetes.
The Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center was honored to have Chris visit the children and families at the clinic for Athletes for Hope Day. Chris inspires so many people each day, and he shows everyone how to continue to follow their dreams!
