We are excited to announce that graduating resident, Melinda Cushing, M.D., Ph.D., will be staying on with the department in a new and noteworthy role that she was instrumental in developing. Beginning October 2013, Dr. Cushing will be the full-time dermatologist at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles. In the past, the department has provided part-time coverage at the clinic. In addition to her clinics at MCMC, twice a month Dr. Cushing will serve in her role as Assistant Professor at OHSU, contributing to departmental educational events as well as seeing psoriasis and general dermatology patients as a provider within the Center of Excellence for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (CEPPA).

Coming from Colorado, the Gorge is a good fit for Dr. Cushing. She attended Colorado College for her undergraduate studies and the University of Colorado, Boulder for her graduate degree in Biochemical Engineering. She then obtained her medical degree at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine in Denver. Her transition from Colorado started with her internal medicine internship at Stanford and continued to Portland for residency.

Dr. Cushing says she is excited to make her home in the “picturesque town of Hood River.” Growing up in Colorado, she enjoys exploring the outdoors, cycling, skiing, hiking and camping, which attracted her to the active community of Hood River. She says, “I’m really excited about this position that enhances the ongoing alliance between OHSU and MCMC. The collaboration provides the rural population in the Gorge access to OHSU’s extensive resources and expertise, while allowing me to stay involved with resident education, research, and to have a sub-specialty focus,” she continues. “It is going to be a great partnership!”
