Robotic Surgery for Heart Care
Robotics is just one component of OHSU’s comprehensive cardiac program - the only one in the state. Many heart conditions, such as mitral valve repair and replacement, atrial fibrillation, cardiac tumors, atrial-septral defects and single-vessel bypass can be successfully treated by robotic surgery.
Advantages of Robotic Surgery for Heart Care
Traditional heart surgery involves splitting the sternum, or breastbone. With minimally invasive robotic surgery, the surgeon doesn’t need to cut the chest open; procedures are done through a few small incisions. In addition, the robot provides the surgeon with a 3-D view of the operating area - something not possible in open surgery.
Other advantages include:
- Less discomfort after surgery
- Fewer complications
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery and earlier return to normal activities
