Meet Dr. Robert O' Rourke
Robert O’Rourke, M.D. joined OHSU in 2003 after receiving extensive training in minimally invasive general surgery, bariatric surgery and esophageal surgery. Dr. O’Rourke’s clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive bariatric surgery. He has performed hundreds of minimally invasive bariatric operations and is a national leader in the field of bariatric surgery and obesity-related disease. Dr. O’Rourke is one of the very few bariatric surgeons in the Pacific Northwest who is pioneering the use of the DaVinci robot in advanced minimally invasive bariatric procedures, including gastric bypass, gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and revisional bariatric surgery.
Dr. O’Rourke lectures nationwide on the topics of obesity, bariatric surgery and inflammation. He also manages an NIH-funded research effort that studies the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of obesity-related metabolic disease, including diabetes. Dr. O’Rourke received his undergraduate degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his medical degree at the University of California, Los Angeles and his general surgery training at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed an advanced minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon, from 2001-2003.
