Genetics (Molecular and Medical)
Clinic Description
The Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics provides both clinical and laboratory consultation. Patients with either a suspected or known genetic disorder or birth defect, as well as those with various cancer diagnoses and those who may be at increased risk due to a family history of cancer, are seen in both outpatient and inpatient settings. They may be referred for the purposes of diagnosis, counseling or management. The field of medical genetics and birth defects is notable for both its complexity (literally thousands of conditions) and the rapid evolution of new diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
Patients and their families are seen as outpatients in the general genetics, prenatal, cancer, or metabolic clinics. Medical and family history are reviewed, clinical and laboratory examinations are performed as needed, and counseling is provided. The patient and the referring physician receive a summary of the evaluation, counseling and recommendations.
Specialized laboratory testing is available on-site for chromosomal (cytogenic), metabolic, and DNA based diagnoses. Laboratory testing for hereditary cancer syndromes is arranged with other certified laboratories.
