Anesthesiology
Clinic Description
The Department of Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Medicine provides clinical anesthesia coverage for all OHSU Hospitals and Clinics and at the Portland Veterans' Administration Medical Center. The department also offers comprehensive acute and chronic pain management services through OHSU's Comprehensive Pain Center and Pediatric Pain Management Center.
Anesthesia and acute care is managed over a broad spectrum of disciplines, including pediatric, obstetrical and cardiac anesthesiology as well as critical care. A dedicated group of anesthesiologists and physician assistants care for patients in the surgical subspecialty ICU and Neuro-ICU, ensuring around the clock direct and immediate care by an intensivist. With the growth in minimally invasive procedures performed outside the operating room, the department also provides anesthesia care in radiology, the gastroenterology suite, and numerous other locations. In addition, in conjunction with the department's regional anesthesiology team,
OHSU is one of only a few centers in the U.S. that has successfully developed an ambulatory anesthesia program, allowing orthopedic surgery patients to benefit from continuous pain relief while recovering at home.
The department also serves as a primary participant in the Level I Trauma Center effort providing airway management, pulmonary and cardiovascular assessment, patient resuscitation and follow-up care of patients in that milieu. Active research in the department focuses on neuroprotection, patient safety, and pain management.
The department is also a leader in simulation training and continued education for health care professionals and has been instrumental in facilitating the development of simulation programs around the state.
